A Little Corduroy Pencil Case, Made by You!

This soft corduroy pencil case is so cute for your kiddo heading back-to-school! Detailed with your favorite name in dimensional 3D yarn letters, this handcrafted pouch is a lovely weekend project, small enough to finish in an afternoon, and personal enough to feel like a real keepsake once it's done. Make one for yourself, or make a stack of them for the people you love.

Tips for Making the Cutest Personalized Pencil Case for a Back-to-School Craft

  • Yarn that does not easily untwist works best. If you prefer a colored rope, that would work work just as well.

  • Laying out the design first is important because you can move it around a bit until you find the right layout.

  • Less is more with the glue gun! Just a dab will do ya. If you get a big glob of glue on there, it will show through in the final design and look a bit sloppy.

Why You’ll Love This Craft

  • It’s super simple but kids always love things that are personalized (those cute little egomanics…). You’ll get some bonus points with them for sure!

  • Some things deserve more than a quick trip down the school supply aisle. This is one of them.

Why Back-to-School Supplies Is a Ritual Worth Keeping

I remember the days of Trapper Keepers and Lisa Frank folders. I absolutely relished going school supply shopping come August. I may have been a weird kid given how excited I would get for the close of summer. But I was ready! Bring on those freshly sharpened pencils and the smell of a new notebook. Don’t even get me started on all the colored writing utensils: a box of 150 different colored crayons (with names like Banana Mania and Screamin’ Green!), thick and thin markers, and the holy grail: GEL PENS!

For anyone who was (and still is) as big of a back-to-school nerd as me, here's a handmade pencil case craft that can rekindle that back-to-school ritual. I’ll put mine next to my trapper keeper…

One Craft Idea, So Many Reasons to Make It

For Students: Stitch up a pencil case with real personality. A fun way to customize school supplies, and a good beginner project for practicing some 3-D lettering.

For Beauty Lovers: This could easily double as a charming little makeup bag or skincare pouch, perfect for containing your beauty products.

For Travelers: Imagine a customized toiletry bag, or a neat little home for cables, chargers, and small gadgets. This is a great project to punch up your travel accessories.

For Special Occasions: Make a set as bridesmaid gifts, a flower girl surprise, or a birthday treat. This personalized craft could be a little handmade touch that means so much more than something store bought.

  • 1

You can use any color combinations your prefer, but I found alternating colors created a fun design. Pull 4-6 inches of yarn for the first letter of the name. Then lay out the letter in place on the pencil bag.

  • 2

Repeat Step 1 for the remaining letters of the name, alternating yarn colors based on your preference. The letters don’t need to be perfectly laid out as they’ll be moved a bit when gluing.

  • 3

Once all your letters are laid out, you are ready to begin gluing. Using a hot glue gun, gently lift the edges of the yarn on the first letter of the name. Continue this until the letters are all in place and are no longer able to move around. *NOTE: You don’t need much glue for this! Less is more.

  • 4

Once you have all of the letters in place, you can go back over any areas of the yarn that are not stuck down onto the pencil bags.

  • 5

Next, give the name a once over to make sure you haven’t missed any loose areas of yarn.

  • 6

Once the glue is dry, you can gently and carefully trim off any excess glue that may be showing around the edges of the yarn. Finally, pop in your freshly sharped pencils and you’re done!
